Cambridge Who’s Who Member, Deborah C. Hedrick, Featured in the Demopolis Times

Deborah C. Hedrick became a member of Cambridge Who’s Who in August 2007. So you can only imagine her surprise when she was named the Clinical Supervisor of the Year in 2008. “I was actually kind of shocked at first,” Hedrick said.

Hedrick has worked at the Fitz-Gerald Clinic for 11 years. As the clinical supervisor, she is responsible for overseeing 25 employees, reviewing medical reports and acting as the direct liaison between doctors and patients. She attributes her success to Gail Allgood, Dr. M.J. Fitz-Gerald and Mack Fitz-Gerald for helping her to progress in her field. “I love it here. I think, actually, it’s more like family and home, besides my real family,” she said. Cambridge Who’s Who Member, Nancy Bauser, Publishes a Guide to Help Survivors of Catastrophe

Cambridge Who’s Who VIP member, Nancy Bauser, is a social worker and disability life coach with the NSB Group in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She has published a book entitled Acceptance Groups for Survivors: A Guide for Facilitators. The book is intended for use by professionals who work with survivors of traumatic brain injuries or other conditions resulting in disabilities.

In 1971, Ms. Bauser survived a head-on collision, which resulted in a severe brain stem injury. After the accident, she had to relearn how to walk, talk, think and function independently. Ms. Bauser said in an article published in the June 2008 issue of Psychology Today that she believed the secrets to her success were not seeing failure as an option, maintaining determination while accepting temporary setbacks to position herself for future success and refusing to capitulate to helplessness. This allowed her to be ambitious and accomplish the goals she had set for herself. Written in a straightforward manner, Ms. Bauser reaches out to other survivors through Acceptance Groups for Survivors to help them continue with their lives.

With its basis in personal experience, the book also presents a systematic method on how to help victims of catastrophe. Ms. Bauser has developed an approach that facilitators, social workers, psychologists and rehabilitation personnel can use to aid those who have suffered similar physical traumas. She has designed a structured group program, helping survivors to accept their deficits, so they can begin recovery.

Frank Farelly, a former clinical professor, author and internationally known psychotherapist says that Acceptance Groups for Survivors is a well-organized, compassionate and realistic guide. Others have also described it as a “user-friendly guide that asks all the right questions” and is “most interesting.” Her book relays the message that recovery is making progress, giving her peace and the ability to be content with her life and limitations.

After her severe and life-threatening brain injury in 1971, Ms. Bauser made more than a full recovery. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1973 and master of social work from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1976. Ms. Bauser also became a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers in 1984.

Cambridge Who’s Who Remembers Sergeant Israel Garcia

Cambridge Who’s Who honors member Sergeant Israel Garcia, 24, of Long Beach, California, who gave his life for this country while fighting during his third tour of duty in Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom. Garcia was born on January 19, 1984 in Nayarit, Mexico and moved to Long Beach, CA with his parents when he was two years old. He attended Lafayette Elementary and Jackie Robinson Academy and graduated from Long Beach Poly High School before joining the United States Army in October of 2002.

In 2003, Garcia participated in Airborne Wing Training at Fort Benning, GA. He continued his training at Fort Bragg, NC from 2003 to 2006 where he took part in 1st Battalion Parachute Training, 504th Parachute. On March 11, 2006, Garcia married his high school sweetheart, Lesly. They lived in Vicenza, Italy, where Garcia was stationed in the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Chosen Company.

On July 13, 2008, Garcia died when enemy forces in Wanat, Afghanistan attacked Observation Post Topside with small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades. Following a failed first rush, Garcia and three other soldiers headed to the observation post under fire to provide reinforcement and first aid to their injured comrades. At the end of the battle, nine soldiers had died, including Garcia, and 27 were wounded.

“Sergeant Israel Garcia was a true patriot who sacrificed his life to protect the values and ideals that are held dear in this country. He fought with pride and courage and Californians and will never forget his service,” said California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Family members reminisce about Garcia’s desire to be remembered as a hero, his love for soccer and his enjoyment of horseback riding.

Garcia is survived by his wife Lesly Garcia, parents Victor and Mari Cruz Garcia and brother Ramsses. His funeral mass was held on July 25, 2008 at Holy Family Church, Wilmington, CA and burial at All Souls Cemetery, Long Beach, CA. Garcia was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart for his bravery, dedication and service. He was inducted into the Cambridge Who’s Who Registry in September 2008. Growing up in Venice Center, Mary Beth Riley Moran had the good fortune to know with absolute certainty what she wanted to do with her life from a relatively early age.

From a career in the Air Force, Mary Beth Riley Moran now works for the Federal Aviation Administration as an aviation safety inspector working in Rochester. She was recently chosen for the Cambridge Who's Who List, a professional resource used for networking and mentoring purposes that recognizes the accomplishments of individuals that have made a distinct place for themselves in their careers. A drive and determination has earned Moran a distinct honor.

Cambridge Who's Who Member, Joseph Siofele, publishes AMATAGA

Cambridge Who’s Who lifetime member, Joseph Siofele, has written a new book entitled AMATAGA that explores the origins of planet Earth, Polynesia and Malaysia. Released on August 20, 2008, the e-book contains his view of the Genesis Creation story, confronts the theory of evolution and even suggests a cure for cancer.

The findings that Siofele expresses in AMATAGA are a result of more than 20 years of research on the origin of Polynesia. In chapter one, Siofele explores the book of Genesis from the Bible and draws parallels between the Creation story and the Samoan legends of PAPALAGI and SAMOANA as well as the Atlantis myth. Chapter two explains Siofele’s view on the theory of evolution and DNA. He also states that he is filing a lawsuit in federal court to “declare evolution as flawed and dangerous for education.” Siofele does not believe that public education should teach the theory of evolution without due notice.

Chapter three reveals the origin of Polynesia, ending a 400-year-old mystery of its origins while chapter four offers a possible cure for cancer based on Biblical information. He has suggested to the two governments in Somoa that these reefs be protected as landmarks demonstrative of “Intelligent Design” instead of random appearance. Siofele ends with chapter seven, which offers a closing argument on the points and explanations mentioned in chapters one through six.

Daughter of survivors keeps memory alive

Joseph Horn died in 1999, 30 years after moving to Glen Rock and 60 years after the Nazis began a series of devastating actions that would leave him as the sole survivor of his Polish family.

Horn and his wife, Dinah, did not discuss their wartime experiences with their three daughters — not until Sandy, at age 10, discovered a black notebook with yellowed pages covered in her father’s handwriting.

"I knew it was something my parents didn’t want me to see," Sandy Rubenstein recalls today. "I locked myself in the bathroom [to read it] because I yearned to know where they got those tattoos, why they spoke with foreign accents, why we had no grandparents. I read voraciously, and the more I read the less I really understood."

The stories gradually started spilling out when she confronted her parents with her discovery. The notebook, she learned, contained memoirs her father had started to write in a displaced-persons’ camp in Stuttgart.

"I remember the sadness that would come over his eyes when I asked certain questions," said Rubenstein, a Woodcliff Lake resident. "He would pat my head and bemoan the fact that this was the legacy he had to leave us. He did not belabor the answers; he was patient and wise."
The Horns both came from the same city, Radom, and had met in its ghetto when Dinah (then Danka) was 12 and Joseph was 15. Dinah survived Bergen-Belsen and met up with her future husband again at the DP camp. "My father arrived in New York in 1947; my mother arrived in July 1949 and they were married in November 1949," Rubenstein related.

In 1995, Joseph and Dinah Horn sat for a videotaped interview with Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation. A year later, using his old notebook as a starting point, Horn wrote "Mark it With a Stone: A Moving Account of a Young Boy’s Struggle to Survive the Nazi Death Camps"(Barricade Books). Rubenstein said she did not know her father’s full story until she read it in its preliminary stages.

With his book in hand, Horn began speaking of his experiences at schools and community groups in order to actualize the words he chose for his foreword: "I implore God to give me the strength to do justice to those we left behind. To tell their story and mine so it may touch the hearts of people, now and in the future. To make sure, to the extent that I can, that our ordeal will not have been in vain."

Last year, Rubenstein had approached her father’s publisher about reissuing his book and received an enthusiastic response.

In February, Barricade Books released a new paperback edition of the 223-page book, with an introduction by Rubenstein giving her perspective as the child of survivors.
Rubenstein is a reading and language-arts teacher at Horace Mann in Riverdale, N.Y., where she first began following in her father’s footsteps by presenting 35-minute multimedia talks to middle- and high-school classes about his experiences. Now that the new edition of the book is out, she has expanded her schedule to venues in New Jersey as well. The presentation begins with a picture of the cover of "Mark it With a Stone" and includes up to 20 DVD clips from the Shoah Foundation interview.

"My dad was 12 when the war began, the same age as many of the children I speak to," she said. "The day he was supposed to enter seventh grade, the bombs began to fall. There’s a clip of him talking about what it was like on that day. When we talk about statistics, it doesn’t mean anything. But to tell one personal story touches hearts."

She also is working with the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education to devise workshops teaching children of survivors how to pass along their parents’ stories.
Her mother, who now lives in Washington Township, is not comfortable with public speaking but has attended some of her daughter’s lectures.Rubenstein is hopeful that her presentations encourage students to "reflect on their own moral responsibility, and to stand up and fight against genocide and prejudice, which still occur today. The concept of remembrance is not only about what happened in the past, but how to behave in the future. I believe this heartfelt program marks the advent of ways to teach the Holocaust after survivors are no longer with us."

Here on ‘Skoped Out With Stoli Razz’ you know that we love to interview the hottest new artists. This week we are going behind the scenes to the the people who make the industry run like it does. It is a priviledge to interview Mona Loring, the president of Mona Loring PR in CA. Mona created & runs a full capacity PR firm for music, books, TV, & film. If you are looking for that big break this is for you!

Stoli: At what age did you decide that you wanted to get into PR and the music industry?
ML: I knew I wanted to be in the entertainment industry my entire life. For years I always thought I’d be the one in the spotlight until I got a dose of reality in college. I was a theatre minor and by the time I took my first acting class, I came to the realization that the spotlight wasn’t for me and that I’d rather be the one to do big things in the background. Flash forward, I was 26 when I went into PR after freelance writing while taking copywriting (PR writing) courses. It was kismet in a way– the entire thing fell into my lap. Not to cut myself short, I have worked 17-20 hours days over the past three years, but I did get lucky finding what I was meant to do so randomly and at such a young age.

Stoli: Did you have to go to a special school or university to study PR and/or music business?
ML: Yes and no. I took courses in copywriting, which is a form of PR writing. Therefore, my background in PR writing is solid. I had to learn everything else from experience. As I was growing, I was trying to learn every angle of PR in every area I possibly could. I worked for free at time but now, I have experience in non-profit and philanthropic, business, fashion, and literary public relations in addition to my background with TV, film and music.

Stoli: What had happened that led you to starting your own company MLC PR? How did you go out and attract clients when you were just starting out?
ML: This is where the luck comes into play. My first job in PR was as a PR Director for a children’s book publisher called Playdate Kids Publishing. The president of the company owned a music video production company where I had interned in college so she already knew my work ethic well. When she read a few press releases and articles I had published, she called and asked me to work for her on the spot. I was already making a living writing freelance, but I always had an interest in PR– just never thought I could get into it without working at a large company first. I decided to throw caution to the wind and go for it. Since my passion was always in the entertainment industry, in addition to working with the publishing house, I sought after film producers, musicians, actors and reality stars. I offered them incredible rates and asked them to give me a shot– I was a smart girl who’d do them well while trying to build my firm. Without hesitation many of them agreed… Things just snowballed from there! Word of mouth rocks…

Stoli: Your firm handles everything from radio promotion, music licensing and corporate sponsorship acquirement, artist development and consulting services. Would you not say that you are are much more than just a PR firm and maybe even on the verge of management as well?
ML: We definitely can be seen as a form of management to some, and I do personally have music management in my background. We try not to outright say we offer management since we work with many music managers seamlessly without crossing any lines. However, when we have an artist who is not yet completely established and is somewhat starting out, we definitely do our best to assist them outside of what our services provide, mainly because we treat clients like family and we want them to do their best. These extra services definitely give us a leg up over many other PR firms.

Stoli: MLC PR also handles book, movies, and TV PR. What is a major difference that you see when promoting a music client than a TV show or book release?
ML: Music clients are the most laid-back clients of all. There is a different kind of passion that I see in musicians. With authors, they’re much less artistic and much more business-minded. TV clientele is a mix. Some are extremely passionate artists and others are natural-born entrepreneurs.

Stoli: You have had very impressive success thus far. What top three traits would you say are crucial for success in business today?
ML: Thank you, it didn’t come easy! Crucial traits for business success? I’d say: drive, intelligence and confidence. If I could add another, I’d add ethics, but unfortunately, I do see many people succeed in this world without it.

Stoli: If a client comes to you for your services but you are not feeling their sound or potential, how would you handle that?
ML: I am very honest. If I am not feeling them, I tell them in some way. I may lessen the blow and say it politely, but I never work with anyone I don’t believe in. I also try my best to give them constructive criticism. If they have potential, I definitely try to give them some tips on what they could do to improve.

Stoli: How has the Internet revolutionized the PR industry from how it was many years ago?
ML: Wow, I don’t think I could even touch this topic without at least an hour of someone’s time. To sum it up as best I can, I’d say that the internet has been incredible for the PR industry. Publicists who know how to think outside of the box now can reach the masses without the media. Through brilliant websites like: Myspace, Facebook, iSound, Stickam.com, etc., publicists can create a client’s image, set the record straight, disseminate news and much more.

Stoli: What PR campaign that you worked on until now are you most proud of how effective it was?
ML: That is a tough question because I am proud of a number of my campaigns. Specifically with music clientele, my firm has brought bands no one knew about in the spotlight, created local celebrities and even scored record label attention through the buzz we’ve created. It’s been amazing.

Stoli: When you are not working at the desk, what do you like to do on your free time?
ML: What is free time? ‘Nuff said.

Stoli: Where do you see the music industry headed in 10 years from now?
ML: Again, another topic that could be a chapter in an entire book. The music industry has changed immensely because of the Internet. Artists now have a plethora of outlets to share their music to the public online. I choose the term “plethora” carefully because this abundance can at times be damaging. There’s so much out there, it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. Many artists are now trying to release their music without the help of a label, which I agree, for some, is a smart plan. However, for many, if the marketing is not well thought-out, and the team around the artist is not well-built, failure is far too likely. Bottom line, I think in the next 10 years, the music industry will see a shift in music distribution leading to more and more independent artists and labels legitimately competing with the majors.

Stoli: Where would you like to see MLC PR in 5 years from now?
ML: I have to say I am thankful for where it is now! In such a short period of time the firm has grown immensely and the only thing I’d want to see is more growth, while the family-feel remains intact. We may seem somewhat corporate from an imaging standpoint, and I branded us like that on purpose, we’re professional and we mean business. However, our clients all feel right at home, knowing our hearts and minds are on their side at all times.

Stoli: You hired Jennifer Lyneis to handle corporate sponsorships (as well as head up record promotion and music licensing). What are the big corporations looking for before they invest in a musical act or entity?
ML: They want what everyone else wants when investing in anything. The peace of mind that they’re supporting an artist that has stirred up a strong buzz and built a solid following. Jen and I decided to come together because we both knew an artist would strongly benefit if they had one solid firm act as a team fueling the each other representative’s fire. When MLC PR builds a buzz for an artist and/or raises their profile, a record promoter can get them played on airwaves that much easier– and that much more often. If we create a celebrity-like image for an artist, a company is that much more likely to endorse or sponsor their act. Same thing on the flip side, radio airplay and corporate sponsorship gives us a story…

Stoli: What form of marketing would you say is most effective and why?
ML: In this day and age, online marketing is by far the most effective. The reason is plain and simple– the Internet’s outreach far surpasses any national magazine or radio show’s numbers. We’re always trying to build a strong online buzz around each client because in this day and age, almost everyone surfs the net to hear new music, check out their favorite artists and read the news.

Stoli: What can we look for from MLC PR for 2008 & beyond?

My father also helped nurture my passion for wildlife and bird-watching by teaching me how to make birdhouses and feeders. In winter, we spent hours filling feeders and preparing new nesting boxes for the next season. Every day, it was exciting to walk through the woods around our house, watching the bird activity.

As I got older and started a family, I wanted my children to have this same appreciation for nature. My two kids love being outdoors. We plant flowers and trees, fill feeders, clean out birdhouses and more, all for our feathered friends. My daughter even raised butterflies last spring.

Hummingbirds are some of our favorite visitors, especially as the sightings around our house have increased over the years. Ruby-throated hummingbirds are amazing with their speed and iridescent colors.

A few years ago, I noticed that my free time being outside with my kids was quickly diminishing. I was so busy putting in long hours at work that I didn't really have time to do the things I loved most.

That's when I began thinking about starting my own business of building birdhouses and other outdoor products. It was too risky, though. I had no way of knowing if people would buy my creations, and I had no idea if it would even be worth my time.
So I headed in a different direction altogether. I started looking for wholesalers in the United States that that had good, quality products that I could sell. I found many great companies, so I decided to open up a new on-line company, Barn in the Sticks.

One of my first goals with my new business was to find a hummingbird feeder for my parents. They had a terrible time with ants and wasps at their feeder, and I knew others shared their concerns.

I found a great feeder with a bee guard and ant moat already on it. My parents were happy and verified the feeder's success, so I knew it was a must for my new store. Now, I have several hummingbird products, including a kit with a feeder, ant guard, nectar mix and cleaning tool.
I want my business to do well, but my goals really go beyond that. Most of the products on my Web site are made in the United States, and I've selected them all with pride.

When it comes down to it, I'm just like anyone else who wants a good, quality feeder or birdhouse. I trudge through mounds of snow to fill my feeders in winter. And I spend hours watching nesting birds in spring and summer.

As a kid, I never imagined my grandmother's bird feeders and father's lessons in building would lead to a business. But I'm glad it did. I'm having the time of my life running Barn in the Sticks, and I look forward to sharing my love of nature with many others.

NH Heroes: Emergency? They're going in

MILFORD – When the fire call came in just before 1 a.m. last May 18, four Milford police officers rushed to 48 Dearborn St.

Officers Weston Vollheim and Dana Johnson were the first to arrive at the home; within moments, they were joined by officers Garret Booth and Christopher Blastos.

Together at an award ceremony at the Milford Police Station, the four officers involved in the attempt to rescue Ellen Cassidy during a house fire are, from left, Christopher Blastos, Dana Johnson, Weston Vollheim and Garret Booth.

"We found heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the residence," Vollheim recalled, "and all four of us ran in."

While Johnson and Booth surveyed the first floor, Vollheim and Blastos ran upstairs, yelling and trying to get a response from the two residents they believed were inside.

"Suddenly, we were facing a wall of smoke," Vollheim said. "There were four or five inches of breathable air near the floor, but otherwise we couldn't see at all."

As embers and debris started falling from the ceiling, Blastos stuck his head down into the clear air below the smoke and found Ellen Cassidy, 60, lying on the floor of a second-floor bedroom.

"He pulled her out and we brought her out of the house," Vollheim said.

Vollheim and Booth then started looking for Cassidy's son, but it turned out he wasn't home.

"We were wearing polyester, which is like kindling," Vollheim said, "and when more debris started falling, Officer Booth, who was the senior officer, ordered us to get out."

Once outside, Booth and Blastos decided to take one more look inside the house while Vollheim joined Johnson in administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation to Cassidy until the Milford Ambulance Service arrived.

"Unfortunately, we couldn't get her back," he said.

Cassidy died at the scene. Authorities said the cause of death was smoke inhalation. The fire was not considered suspicious.

Although the officers weren't able to save Cassidy, Vollheim said he wouldn't hesitate to try to save someone's life, even if it meant risking his own.

"I'm not interested in running into another burning building," Vollheim said, "but as police officers, we're often the first ones on the scene. If someone's trapped inside a burning building, we're going in."

Vollheim, Blastos, Booth and Johnson will be honored with New Hampshire Union Leader Hero Awards, presented in conjunction with Citizens Bank, at a reception at the State House in Concord Thursday.

The Hero Awards are given out annually to recognize the efforts of New Hampshire residents who risked their lives in attempts to save others.

Rose Anderson of Hampton is your average mother of two, with one exception — she has an exceptionally large heart.

On Thursday, she drove around her friend Frances Exum to the veterinarian to have Exum’s cats examined. Because Exum is at an age where she can no longer drive, Anderson volunteers to take “Ms. Frances” to places she needs to go.

That’s typical for Anderson — always doing something for someone else.

“I can’t drive any more, so when I need to go some place I’ll ask Rose and she’s always there,” Exum said. “So instead of driving Ms. Daisy, it’s driving Ms. Frances.”

When Exum began to describe Anderson, every adjective she used was synonymous with someone known for their generosity.

Anderson said her selfless spirit began to blossom when she was a child growing up in Kansas City. Her mother, who was big on community service, would force Anderson and her sister to take part in different missions around town as early as six years old.

She continued serving others in various capacities as she grew into adulthood including working with the Kansas City YWCA, shelters for abused women and children, and helping to establish a nonprofit thrift store.

“I’ve done whatever I can, whenever I can to help serve my community,” Anderson said. “I believe in empowering others to know they are worth more and are able to do more.”

When Anderson moved to Hampton 13 years ago she brought along her spirit of helping others.

For nearly 10 years, the housewife worked as a Veterans Administration volunteer. Anderson spent countless hours tending to the needs of local World War II veterans.

In 2004, Anderson was the driving force to get the Henry County High School marching band an equipment truck. Prior to that the band had to rent U-Haul trucks whenever they wanted to go to a band competition.

“She is the reason the band has the equipment truck,” Henry County High School Band Booster president Pauline Wilhoit said. “She took on that endeavor and managed to work miracles to make it happen.”

Anderson said one of her greatest volunteer efforts came while working as a troupe leader with a local Girl Scouts group. She said one of her girls received the Gold Award, which is equivalent to the Boy Scout’s Eagle Scout.

Her volunteer efforts over the years led Anderson to be recognized as a Cambridge Who’s Who Woman of Distinction award recipient.

While receiving awards are great, Anderson prefers a warm thank you from someone she has helped.

“Most of the time it will happen in an airport or somewhere really busy. All of a sudden I’ll hear someone call my name,” she said. “They’ll run up and hug me and say thank you for helping them out.”

Rose Anderson joined Cambridge Who's Who as a lifetime member in June 2007. Ms. Anderson has also been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who as a VIP member. "In the mid 1960's while working as a nurse, she encountered a patient with a broken painting arm, Alexander Dzigurski. Dorothy was instrumental in Alexander's recovery and a great friendship, romance and marriage followed. In 1968 she married Alexander Dzigurski, famous for his unique and colorful seascapes, one of his larger canvases, called 'From Sea to Shining Sea,' hangs in the Franklin Mint Museum. It was painted in 1976 in honor of the nation's Bicentennial, when the Franklin Mint Gallery of American Art commissioned him 'as America's finest painter of the sea." Together they had traveled extensively throughout the contiguous United States and beyond to Europe, Canada, and Hawaii. In short order, the happy couple had a son, born with oil paints flowing through his veins.

In 1973, for three and one half months, Dorothy, alongside her husband and son, sketched and painted in the Swiss Alps, France, Italy, Yugoslavia and Spain.

Today, Alex Dzigurski II is a fine artist in his own right, in part a testament to Dorothy's love of art and her devotion to her artist husband and to her artist son. Today, grandmother and matriarch, one of her great joys is brushing away at her easel.

Dzigurski with 40 years of professional nursing experience and has been a certified neurological linguistics coach for nine years. In this role, she uses her skills as a nurse and painter to coach those who have difficulty with the processes of speaking, listening, reading, writing and using sign language. Dorothy's artwork is exhibited in Northern California at the Simic Gallery in Carmel, California.

La Crescenta, CA…May 8, 2007–Joel Gilhoi Kim, Former Motor Transportation Officer, Embarkation Officer, and Assistant Logistics Officer of the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion has been honored by Cambridge Who's Who for his Military Logistics Efforts during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Kim joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 1997 and began boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego in 1998. He graduated in the top 10 percent of his class as 2nd Squadron Leader and attended Camp Pendleton for marine combat training. He then went on to the Marine Corps Field Wireman's Course in Twentynine Palms, CA. In 1998, he was assigned to the Fleet Marine Force unit, 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Headquarters and Service Company, Communications Platoon.

Kim pursued his commission in the Marine Corps after receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of California at Irvine in 2001. He reported to Quantico, VA for Officer Candidate School and attended a Logistics Officer Course at Camp Lejeune, NC, reporting for active duty in Yuma, AZ as the assistant logistics officer. On February 5, 2003, Kim’s squadron arrived in Kuwait during Operation Iraqi Freedom where he continued his role as the assistant logistics officer, supporting the unit with food, water, fuel, repair parts, billeting, transportation, maintenance management, utility engineering, industrial hygiene, medical support, weapons and ammunition and many other logistical matters. Upon his return to the United States in June of that same year, he was promoted to First Lieutenant and deployed back to Iraq for his second tour. He was appointed Camp Commandant for Weapons Tactics Instruction and honorably discharged in February 2005. Kim is now in the inactive reserve.

E. Dorrit Hoffleit, Ph.D. Remembered by Cambridge Who's Who for her Contributions to the Field of Astronomy

NEW YORK-April 19, 2007 - E. Dorrit Hoffleit, Ph.D. (March 12, 1907 - April 9, 2007) was a world-renowned astronomer, and an expert on variable stars, astrometry, and the history of astronomy. She wrote The Bright Star Catalogue, a compendium of information on the 9,110 brightest stars in the sky. Now in its fifth revision, her work on the catalogue remains a valuable reference to astronomers. She also co-authored The General Catalogue of Trigonometric Stellar Parallaxes, which contains precise distance measurements to 8,112 stars. In 1988, minor planet 3416 was named "Dorrit" in her honor.

E. Dorrit Hoffleit began her astronomical career in 1929 as a research assistant at Harvard University's Observatory and soon became an expert at spectroscopically determining the absolute brightness of stars. In 1943, she joined the Ballistic Research Lab at Aberdeen Proving Ground where she computed missile trajectories. In 1956, after 25 years at Harvard, Dr. Hoffleit went to Yale to run its star cataloging program. She was also director of the Maria Mitchell Observatory, Nantucket, from 1957-1978. Under her mentorship, 11 women in the observatory's summer research program went on to earn doctorate degrees in astronomy, and collectively they discovered over 1,000 new variable stars.

During her career, Hoffleit wrote hundreds of articles on astronomy. In 1988, she was awarded the George Van Biesbroeck Prize for a lifetime of service to astronomy. In 1993, she was the recipient of the Annenberg Award for Science Education. In 1998, she was inducted into the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame.

E. Dorrit Hoffleit received her D.Sc. from Central Connecticut State University (1998); D.Sc., from Smith College (1984); Ph.D. in astronomy from Radcliffe College (1938) and her bachelor of arts in mathematics, cum laude, from Radcliffe College (1928).

Romankiw earned his Ph.D. from MIT in 1962. He is the recipient of the Perkin Medal from Societies of Chemical Industries (1993), the Vittorio de Nora Medal from the Electrochemical Society (1994), the IEEE Morris A. Lieberman Award, the Inventor of the Year Award from Eastern New York Intellectual Property Law Association (2000), and Inventor of the Year Award from the New York Intellectual Property Law Association (2001). Romankiw received 13 Outstanding Invention and Contribution Awards from IBM and 25 Invention Achievement Awards.

Cambridge Who's Who names James O'Brien Professional of the Year in Meteorology

Tallahassee, FL …April 18, 2007– Dr. James J. O'Brien, retired Director Emeritus of Florida State University’s Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies, has been named Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in meteorology. While inclusion in Cambridge Who's Who is an honor, only one member in each discipline is named the Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year. The Cambridge Who's Who selection committee picks these special Who's Who honorees based on accomplishments, academic achievement, leadership, and service.

O'Brien, an expert in meteorology, founded the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies at the University of Florida. He is credited with ocean modeling which led to new breakthroughs in understanding coastal upwelling, El Niño, La Niña, and hurricane effects on the ocean. Since retiring in December 2006, O’Brien has focused his research on the effects of global climate change. COAPS promotes interdisciplinary research on air-sea interaction, ocean and coupled air-sea modeling, climate predictions, statistical studies and predictions of social/economic consequences due to ocean-atmospheric variations.

O'Brien received his Ph.D. and masters degree in meteorology from Texas A&M University, and his bachelors degree in chemistry from Rutgers University. A gifted public speaker and lecturer, O’Brien is a fellow of American Meteorological Society, American Geophysical Union, Royal Meteorological Society and AAAS. He is the recipient of numerous awards including ONR Distinguished Ocean Educator, Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor, Florida State University, and UDA Prize, Japan Oceanographic Society.
